Tonight, the Texas Tech football team faces Baylor in Waco with both teams looking to move to 3-3 on the season.  The 7 p.m. CST kickoff will be an intriguing edition of the oldest annually-played series the Red Raiders have.

All-time, Baylor holds a 41-39-1 edge over Tech.  That includes wins in nine of the last twelve meetings.

Baylor head coach Dave Aranda is in his fourth year with the Bears.  He’s gone 2-1 against Texas Tech including last year’s 45-17 victory in Lubbock.

According to Fan Duel, Texas Tech is a small 1.5-point favorite.  The over/under is set at 59.9 points.

The ESPN.com Matchup Predictor gives the Red Raiders a 66.1% chance of winning.

Texas Tech vs. Baylor game notes

  • Texas Tech and Baylor boast one of the longest-running series in the Big 12 as the two schools have met annually since 1956 dating back to their time in the Southwest Conference. Baylor controlled a 19-17 advantage over the Red Raiders during their SWC tenure but immediately lost its next 15 games in the series upon entering the Big 12 in 1996.
  • This will be the first time Texas Tech has played a night game in Waco since 1999 when the Red Raiders defeated the Bears, 35-7, at their previous home in Floyd Casey Stadium.
  • Texas Tech has not committed a turnover in each of its two Big 12 games against West Virginia and Houston. It marks the first time the Red Raiders have failed to do so over a two-game stretch since 2018 against Oklahoma and Texas.
  • Texas Tech committed only one penalty against Houston, matching the school record for only the sixth time in history and the first time since facing Kansas in 2021. The Red Raiders’ five penalty yards also matched that school record that had been set four times previously, including most recently in that same Kansas victory. It was only the third time in the Big 12 era where Texas Tech had only one penalty and only five penalty yards with the other being in 2016 at TCU.
  • Baylor head coach Dave Aranda has experience on the Texas Tech sidelines, meanwhile, as he was a graduate assistant for the Red Raider defense from 2000-02, the first three seasons under the late Mike Leach. He earned his master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from the university in 2002 before accepting the linebackers coach position at Houston for the 2003-04 seasons.
  • Aranda’s staff also features a Texas Tech great in Lubbock native and cornerbacks coach Kevin Curtis, who was a two-time All-American and three-time All-Big 12 safety for the Red Raiders from 1998-01.
  • Another former Red Raider great is also on the Baylor staff in recruiting and personnel assistant Aaron Hunt, who remains Texas Tech’s all-time career sacks leader after recording 34.0 during the 1999-02 seasons.  (All game notes courtesy of TexasTech.com)
