It sure looks like the Texas Tech football team will have a very real shot of competing for a spot in the Big 12 title game this year. That’s partially because of the way Joey McGuire and his coaching staff have been recruiting talent through the Transfer Portal to beef up a few vulnerable areas on the roster and also because Texas Tech picked up two great new coordinators.
But one of the other main reasons that the Red Raiders will have a chance to fight for a Big 12 championship game spot is because of the insanely chaotic nature of this beautiful conference. There is so much parity in this league right now and it feels like any number of teams will be able to compete alongside Tech for a spot in the Big 12 championship.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way and it sure looks like some number crunching, math calculating formulas and models are projecting a very similar possibility for the Big 12 this season.
Texas Tech sits near the top of a tight race in Kelley Ford’s 2025 preseason Big 12 standings projections
Just check out these preseason projections from Kelley Ford, who has found a way to document just how fun and chaotic the Big 12 could theoretically be this season.

I mean, that’s such a great way of documenting just how close the race is for the two spots in the Big 12 championship game. According to Ford’s projections, HALF of this conference could win five Big 12 games this season.
- Kansas State Wildcats - 6.2 games
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 5.8 games
- BYU Cougars - 5.5 games
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 5.5 games
- TCU Horned Frogs - 5.3 games
- Baylor Bears - 5.3 games
- Kansas Jayhawks - 5.0 games
- Utah Utes - 5.0 games
That’s just incredible.
There’s not one team that really pulls away from the pack. Yes Kansas State is at the top, and that’s worth noting, but the Wildcats aren’t that far away from the Arizona State Sun Devils or the BYU Cougars and Texas Tech Red Raiders. This conference is going to be an absolute delight to keep up with this season.
