You know, folks, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are probably going to get their 10th win of the season today. And that, my friends, is a lot of fun.
Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raider football team have gone through 30 minutes of play and are already up by 36 points after running right over, through, and around the UCF Knights to set the score at 38-2.
It’s a weird score, admittedly, but it’s a lot of fun to watch. And I have a few thoughts on Texas Tech’s lopsided first half lead over the Knights.
No. 1: Texas Tech’s offense simply can’t be stopped and I love that Mitch Griffis is now in
Hey, this shouldn’t shock anyone, but Texas Tech’s offense is scoring points left and right and by the dozen against a very underwhelming UCF Knights defense. The Knights have allowed for Mack Leftwich’s offense to average 8.6 yards per play.
The Red Raiders, in total, have 352 total yards of offense so far. Which, in just two quarters of play, is actually truly remarkable.
Texas Tech has converted on 50 percent of its third down attempts and has effortlessly thrived through the air and on the ground. Behren Morton (who now gets to rest for the remainder of senior day) completed 14 of 20 attempts for 149 yards and a touchdown.
Now, Mitch Griffis is in and Texas Tech’s backup quarterback has completed five of five passes for 85 yards. That, my friends, is good.
No. 2: Reggie Virgil also definitely can’t be stopped and it’s so much fun to watch him thrive for the Red Raiders
A true centerpiece for Texas Tech’s offense and Mack Leftwich’s system today, Reggie Virgil just simply is unstoppable and has managed to score three touchdowns so far. And those touchdowns have come in two different ways.
In the first half alone, Virgil has hauled in five passes for 72 receiving yards and a touchdown. That alone would be a solid first half statline. But when you add in the 35 rushing yards on two carries which is turned into two rushing scores, it’s clear that Virgil has a significant impact on this Texas Tech offense when he’s on the field.
No. 3: I, for one, greatly appreciate it when Shiel Wood orchestrates a truly smothering Texas Tech defense
It is still so refreshing to see a Texas Tech defense routinely shut down opponents in such a dominant, lopsided way. I love it. And I love watching the Red Raiders defense today as they’ve managed to routinely shut down everything that Scott Frost and the UCF Knights want to do on offense.
Through two quarters, UCF has managed to gain just 12 rushing yards on 17 carries. Which, you know, averages out to *checks notes* 0.7 yards per carry. That, my friends, is not a great thing for an offense to do.
UCF has punted on five different occasions and the only points that the Knights have managed to gain came from a Texas Tech stumble and bumble and mistake of a safety. Other than that? There’s not much going on for UCF when it comes to putting points on the board.
