It looks like Joey McGuire, Mack Leftwich, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders were able to find their highly ranked transfer quarterback for the 2026 season. After the Red Raiders lost in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals down in Miami in the Orange Bowl against the Oregon Ducks, apparently the Texas Tech football team decided to drastically improve its offense.

And here’s how the Red Raiders want to do that. If you’re not already familiar with him, meet Brendan Sorsby, a 5-star transfer quarterback according to 247 Sports who has thrived with the Cincinnati Bearcats over the past season.

After growing up in the DFW area, Sorsby is apparently intent on leaving the Midwest in favor of returning to his home state to play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. And that’s huge for Texas Tech’s 2026 ambitions.

Texas Tech lands a commitment from 5-star transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby

Texas Tech had a pretty remarkable and impressive season, but the Red Raiders just simply couldn’t keep up with the Oregon Ducks in the College Football Playoff. While Texas Tech’s offense was ranked in the top three nationally in scoring prior to the Orange Bowl, it was held scoreless by the Ducks in that 23-0 loss.

So, enter Sorsby, who has been helping lead the Cincinnati Bearcats over the past couple of seasons. Sorsby got his start with the Indiana Hoosiers before transferring out and taking over with the Bearcats offense.

In 2025, Sorsby managed to complete 61.6 percent of his passes and threw for 2800 yards and 27 touchdowns against just five interceptions. He also ran for 580 yards and nine touchdowns this past season. Over two seasons at Cincinnati, Sorsby threw for 5613 yards and 45 touchdowns while completing 62.9 percent of his passes.

It’ll be fascinating to see what Sorsby is able to do when surrounded with a wealth of talent all over the roster at Texas Tech and while playing in Mack Leftwich’s scheme.

Obviously Texas Tech isn’t thrilled with the way this season ended and the Red Raiders are going all in on making next season even better than 2025’s 12-2 run. Getting a new, high profile quarterback is just one part of that.
