Mitch Griffis is a pretty seasoned quarterback who has seen some action in the ACC when he played for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and it sure looks like his experience and maturity make him a very valuable addition to the Red Raiders offense this season.
Griffis has proven to be especially valuable to have on the Texas Tech football roster this season given the injuries that Behren Morton has navigated and the way that Will Hammond suffered a season-ending injury against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
And so, with those two out, Griffis just jumped right in to help the Red Raider offense out in a really frustrating sort of situation. While Griffis was on the field, the offense absolutely shined, which was great to see.
Mack Leftwich, Texas Tech’s offensive coordinator, sure seemed proud of the way QB Mitch Griffis played against Oklahoma State
“What I like about his game is the moment wasn’t too big and he’s kind of got a little freelance,” Mack Leftwich said during a press conference on Monday. “You know, he’s not out there uptight. He was ready to cut it loose and I think you saw it in some of those moments like he wasn’t afraid to push the ball down the field.”
I love that. Truly. That feels like a very valuable sort of trait to have as Texas Tech continues to move on down the season.
“He’s a really talented kid, that’s what you watch him in practice,” Texas Tech’s offensive coordinator continued. “He can really spin the football, he’s not a big guy, but for his stature, he has a lot of arm talent and has some magic too with his ability to scramble.”
When Griffis stepped onto the field against the Cowboys, he managed to effortlessly connect with Texas Tech’s receivers and to push the ball down the field. He completed 9-of-13 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown. And that’s a fascinating stat line to see from a quarterback who is filling in for a couple of injured guys.
