This was last year’s Big 12 championship game. This was a game that many people circled and pointed to and said would have a drastic impact on the way things shook out for the Big 12. This is now a game between two teams that are 5-3 and also effectively out of the race for the conference title game this season.
That doesn’t mean this game won’t be interesting. It doesn’t mean this game isn’t worth watching. In fact, I think it’s going to be a game I keep close attention to this weekend.
And here’s what you need to know to watch it.

Why should Texas Tech fans care about Iowa State vs. Arizona State?
Look, there’s not really any sort of threat of Iowa State or Arizona State crawling back into contention for the Big 12 championship game at this point. Given how they’ve lost games and who they’ve lost to, the Cyclones and the Sun Devils basically just can’t do it at this point. It’s just not something that seems feasible.
And so, this game won’t have a direct impact on Texas Tech. The indirect impact also isn’t that imminent. It would take some weird dominoes to fall for this game’s outcome or either of these teams to have an impact on Texas Tech right now.
But let’s say one of these teams finds a way to put together a really respectable run down the final stretch of the season and then loses its coach in the ridiculous coaching carousel we’re all about to witness this offseason.
Then things might get interesting for Texas Tech. It wouldn’t be shocking to see both Kenny Dillingham and Matt Campbell to get contacted about coaching openings that show up this offseason. It wouldn’t be shocking if they ended up leaving for a more prominent role in either the Big Ten or the SEC.
And if that happens, it wouldn’t be shocking to see either the Cyclones or the Sun Devils try to poach either Shiel Wood or Mack Leftwich. I have no reason to believe that they will do that, but it wouldn’t shock me one bit. And it’s something to keep an eye on as the coaching carousel really starts winding up.
