The Baylor Bears have done well to considerably improve on offense over the past season and a half or so. Dave Aranda deserves some notable credit for the way the Bears have embraced the Air Raid and are thriving on that side of the ball.
Now, Baylor needs some help on defense (which is interesting), but they’re fun to watch, they throw the ball a lot, and they score a lot of points.
There just so happens to be a team out in Lubbock that is able to do a lot of the same, more or less. It’s interesting, because Texas Tech is utilizing an offense that is similar to what Baylor was running about a decade or so ago while Baylor is operating an offense that resembles what Texas Tech is famous for.
It’s funny how that works. And it’s a shame that we won’t get to see Texas Tech and Baylor match up this season.
But, on the bright side, we will get to see Texas Tech face Oklahoma State, who just so happens to be the team that Baylor bulldozed over this past Saturday. And if you paid attention to that game, you’ll notice that Baylor proved that Texas Tech will likely have a ton of fun on offense when the Red Raiders play Oklahoma State.
Baylor’s offense torched Oklahoma State on Saturday and Texas Tech should be able to do the same later this season
Against an Oklahoma State Cowboys team that no longer has Mike Gundy as the head coach of it, the Baylor Bears offense did the following:
- Gain 612 total yards of offense
- Pass for 393 yards
- Run for 219 yards
- Commit one turnover
- Get 29 first downs
- Convert on 7-of-14 third downs
- Convert on 1-of-2 fourth downs
- Score 45 points
Now, again, Baylor has a very productive offense.
Offensive coordinator Jake Spavital really has the Bears rolling on that side of the ball. It’s impressive. Entering the weekend, Baylor had the No. 3 total offense as the Bears gained 477.3 yards per game. The Bears also had the No. 9 scoring offense with 34.5 points per game (while having faced some tough competition early on).
But, Texas Tech has the top offense in both of those categories (at least they did prior to this weekend that they were resting on). If Baylor had fun on offense against Oklahoma State, you can expect the Red Raiders to enjoy that matchup as well when they meet later this season on October 25.
