Is anyone really surprised that Joey McGuire, Mack Leftwich, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders got an incredibly effective offensive showing from their starting quarterback as they hosted the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions?
Behren Morton played an impressive game in the dominant week 1 win over the Golden Lions. Such a dominant win. Such an effective performance.
Though he didn’t play the entirety of this game (a combination of why should he and also he may have gotten slightly dinged up a bit by a hit to his leg), it’s clear that Morton understands how to operate this offense and it sure looks like he can operate it pretty well.
Morton didn’t make any real errors in the series that he got to play. Texas Tech didn’t see their seasoned quarterback stumble and struggle at any point. All he did was effectively move the offense down the field and score touchdowns.
That’s pretty good, if you ask me.
Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton couldn’t be stopped in the dominant first half effort against Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions
Let’s take a look at a few numbers.
Like the 16 of 18 completed pass attempts from Morton in this game. That calculates out to an 89 percent completion percentage, which is good. Or there’s the four touchdown passes without tossing a single pick. That’s also pretty good.
We can talk about how Morton only threw for 201 yards, which isn’t astonishing, but he averaged 11.2 yards per attempt, which is good. And he did that in less than a full half, which makes that number pretty impressive. Context matters and helps showcase how good Morton was.
During his time on the field, Morton was able to connect with seven different receivers. When it came to his touchdown passes, there were three different targets for the four touchdowns that he managed to throw. That’s all pretty solid as well.
It’s going to be fun to see Morton in this offense. It sure seems like he’s going to be able to accomplish quite a bit while getting the chance to work with Leftwich this season.
