Texas Tech’s trip to Houston is going pretty well so far. In the first half against the Cougars, the Red Raiders have managed to effectively double up Houston in total offense as Texas Tech has gained 344 yards while UH has just 173. TTU controls the time of possession at 18:36 to 11:34. And Behren Morton has been super efficient while Caleb Douglas had a monster first half!
As a result, Texas Tech currently leads the Cougars 25-11 and it really feels like the Red Raiders can pile on and further expand that lead in the second half.
So far, Morton has completed 17 of 27 pass attempts for an impressive 261 yards and a touchdown while avoiding any interceptions. Douglas has hauled in five of those catches for 103 yards. Oh! And we’ve got Cameron Dickey and J’Koby Williams who have combined to run for 83 yards and a score (Willimas on a 5-yard run) on 17 carries.
Texas Tech jumps out to a 25-11 first half lead on the road against the Houston Cougars
On top of the offensive dominance, the Red Raiders have also had solid play from their special teams. Texas Tech kicker Stone Harrington has hit on four of five field goal attempts while Upton Bellefant has nailed another field goal for the Red Raiders.
Then there’s the defense, where Texas Tech has managed to pick off UH quarterback Conner Weigman (shoutout to Jacob Rodriguez, who seems to be everywhere all the time always).
The difference in third down conversions really helps share the story of how the first half has gone for Texas Tech and Houston. The Coogs have been pretty robust on defense in the red zone (hence the need for so many field goal attempts from Texas Tech) and that shows as the Red Raiders have converted on 5-of-11 third downs.
But the Cougars offense? Right now, Houston is struggling and is just 1-of-6 on third down attempts. The Red Raiders are playing solid defense right now (even if they aren’t perfect) while also playing efficient offense so far (even if they aren’t perfect). And thus, a 25-11 halftime lead on the road against an unbeaten opponent.
