Well, Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys got the 2025 season started off in pretty rough fashion. When facing off against the UT Martin Skyhawks on Thursday night, Gundy and the Cowboys only managed to beat them by 20 points.
That’s not great. It’s not what you want to see in a season opener. And to make matters worse, Hauss Hejny got injured in a not ideal way. Not that any injury is anything close to ideal, but the Cowboys are going to be without the talented quarterback for a few weeks.
And that’s just not good! Not good at all. In a season where Mike Gundy needs to have some pretty consistently impressive performances, things are off to a shaky start. Oklahoma State got a win, but it wasn’t great.
Big 12 fans speak out as Oklahoma State managed to beat UT Martin in 2025 season opener
Here’s what Big 12 fans had to say about Oklahoma State’s win over UT Martin:
Got the win but need major improvements if they want to win a big 12 game this year.

I love you Big12 but please don’t have too high expectations for us. If Hauss is hurt we will be as bad as last year

Bro isn’t that not that great winning by 20 against the Skyhawks

There’s definitely some work to do for the Cowboys and Big 12 football fans are definitely aware of that fact.

I mean, this sort of win is indeed a win, but it’s not exactly going to inspire much confidence for a program whose coach is under quite a bit of scrutiny because of underwhelming results and underachieving. This particular game doesn’t feel drastically different from some of that.
From experience, scoring less than 30 and only beating an FCS opponent by 20 or less is a sign of a not-so-fun season to come. https://t.co/U2axd6rF5E

The Cowboys might be in trouble. Truly. They might be. If they’re struggling to score against a team like UT Martin, they might run into issues later down the line. Not that the Big 12 is known for having remarkable defenses, but it’s worth noting that it could be a problem in some of the bigger games on Oklahoma State’s schedule.

Of course, this might be the biggest sort of issue for the Cowboys. Just a reminder in case you forgot, the Cowboys lost their quarterback. And that’s not good. Oklahoma State’s offense might end up missing a rather important component! And that will make things even more challenging for Mike Gundy this season.
