After Houston’s home matchup with the Arizona Wildcats, the only team that has managed to beat the Cougars so far this season? Well, that’s the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Willie Fritz and Houston have advanced to 6-1 on the season after surviving their encounter with the Wildcats this weekend.

The Coogs are now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play. Again, that lone loss? That’s to the unbeaten Texas Tech Red Raiders who are set to meet up with the Arizona State Sun Devils (last season’s Big 12 champion) later today.

In their game earlier today, Houston and Arizona looked roughly equal. It really didn't seem like much truly separated the two teams in terms of overall quality. That showed up on the scoreboard and in the way the game played out as Houston needed a last second field goal to secure a 31-28 win.

And now, as UH sits at 3-1 in the Big 12, the Coogs have earned what is essentially the No. 4 spot in the Big 12 standings, behind Texas Tech, BYU, and Cincinnati. Arizona, meanwhile, is 4-3 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. And they’re a bit further down the list.

Big 12 standings, week 8: Houston survives matchup at home with Arizona Wildcats

Here’s what the Big 12 standings look like right now:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 6-0 overall, 3-0 Big 12
  • BYU Cougars - 6-0 overall, 3-0 Big 12
  • Cincinnati Bearcats - 5-1 overall, 3-0 Big 12
  • Houston Cougars - 6-1 overall, 3-1 Big 12
  • Utah Utes - 5-1 overall, 2-1 Big 12
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 4-2 overall, 2-1 Big 12
  • Baylor Bears - 4-2 overall, 2-1 Big 12
  • Iowa State Cyclones - 5-2 overall, 2-2 Big 12
  • Kansas Jayhawks - 4-3 overall, 2-2 Big 12
  • Kansas State Wildcats 3-4 overall, 2-2 Big 12
  • Arizona Wildcats - 4-3 overall, 1-3 big 12
  • TCU Horned Frogs - 4-2 overall, 1-2 Big 12
  • Colorado Buffaloes - 3-4 overall, 1-3 Big 12
  • UCF Knights - 3-3 overall, 0-3 Big 12
  • West Virginia Mountaineers - 2-4 overall, 0-3 Big 12
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys - 1-5 overall, 0-3 Big 12

As long as Texas Tech can handle business against the Sun Devils, Houston’s win won’t really do much to jeopardize the Red Raiders’ shot at securing a spot in the Big 12 championship game. It’s also worth noting that the Red Raiders beating UH previously helps there as well.
