I love that the Big 12 staggers out when games are played these days. I greatly appreciate that. It gives me an opportunity, as a college football fan and sportsblogger (writer? whatever title you want to place here) to take in more football. So, I was grateful that there were a couple of Big 12 games (one of which wasn’t actually a conference game) happening Friday night.
And Friday night was really interesting for the Big 12 this week.
Kansas State, on the road, really did not look all that impressive. And that’s kind of been their story for much of this season up to this point. The Wildcats, when facing the Arizona Wildcats, were upended by an Arizona team that didn’t even have all that great of a performance from Noah Fifita, but was gashed for 189 rushing yards by Ismail Mahdi.
Over in Houston, the Houston Cougars got an impressive statement win at home against Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes. Conner Weigman wasn’t great through the air, but he played a solid game as a whole and his 222 passing yards helped the Cougars get a 36-20 victory. And that works for them.
Big 12 standings, September 13, 2025: Houston Cougars climb up after crushing Colorado Buffaloes in Bayou City
Here’s what the Big 12 football standings look like ahead of Texas Tech’s matchup with Oregon State (and the various other Saturday scheduled games):
- Houston Cougars (3-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12)
- Iowa State Cyclones (3-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12)
- Arizona Wildcats (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- BYU Cougars (2-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Texas Tech Red Raiders (2-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- UCF Knights (2-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Utah Utes (2-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Kansas Jayhawks (2-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- TCU Horned Frogs (1-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Arizona State Sun Devils (1-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Baylor Bears (1-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Cincinnati Bearcats (1-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Oklahoma State Cowboys (1-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- West Virginia Mountaineers (1-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Colorado Buffaloes (1-2 overall, 0-1 Big 12)
- Kansas State Wildcats (1-3 overall, 0-1 Big 12)
Texas Tech really is in a solid position right now. The Red Raiders, sitting at 2-0 overall, have a shot to go 3-0 this week and then head into conference play against the Utah Utes next week with an opportunity to make a huge statement that they belong at the top of this conference right now. That’s exciting.
It’s interesting seeing both the Houston Cougars and the Iowa State Cyclones tied to hold on to the current top of the Big 12 standings. That’s not something I expected entering this season given how much UH struggled a season ago.
But hey, that’s part of what makes this conference just so much fun. It’s definitely something to keep up with all season long.
