Well folks, it looks like the Kansas Jayhawks won’t be going bowling this season unless something weird happens. Also, thanks to Kansas losing on Saturday, the Texas Tech Red Raiders’ win over the Utah Utes looks a little bit more impressive.
That’s because Utah managed to surge right past Kansas in the fourth quarter thanks to an offensive explosion, allowing the Utes to get to 10-2 overall (and 6-2 against Big 12 teams) this season while Kansas happened to fall to 5-7 overall and 3-6 in Big 12 play.
But even though there was that impressive scoring burst from the Utes in the fourth quarter, it’s probably safe to bet that Utah football fans were terrified that their season was about to take a turn for the worst as they were heading into the fourth quarter.
Kansas was playing some pretty impressive football for so much of this game and they just let this one slip past them.
Utah vs. Kansas recap: 4th quarter offensive explosion propels Utah Utes past the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence
The Jayhawks had a 14-10 lead over Utah with the start of the fourth quarter, but the Utes managed to quickly tack a couple of scores on the board thanks to a touchdown pass from Devon Dampier and a 97-yard pick six that put this game out of reach at 24-14.
Kansas did get another touchdown on the board late in the fourth, but a 48-yard strike from Dampier to Larry Simmons set the score at 31-21 and allowed Utah to get its 10th win of the season.
And I’m sure Kansas fans aren’t too thrilled about this one getting away from them. The Jayhawks outgained Utah 477 yards to 414 yards, but three turnovers really allowed the Utes to secure this win.
All in all, this was generally a pretty sloppy game between the Utes and Jayhawks, but I’m sure Utah fans are just happy to have a win here, which will improve their chance at getting a better bowl game (or maybe sneaking into the College Football Playoff depending on what happens around the country).
