Conference play is just getting started in the Big 12 this week and we’re about to start seeing more matchups between Big 12 teams this week. So far, only a small handful of teams have faced off against a conference foe (shoutout to the Iowa State Cyclones, Houston Cougars, Colorado Buffaloes, and Kansas State Wildcats).

Also, there’s just a small handful of unbeaten Big 12 teams right now. The aforementioned Cyclones, Arizona Wildcats, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Utah Utes, and the UH Cougars are in that grouping.

That changes this weekend.

But before we get too deep into how that’ll all change, let’s take a look at how things look within the conference right now.

Big 12 football standings: Utah Utes and Texas Tech Red Raiders still unbeaten ahead of Week 4 matchup in Salt Lake City

Here’s what the Big 12 standings look like at the moment:

  • Iowa State Cyclones (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12)
  • Houston Cougars (3-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12)
  • Arizona Wildcats (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • Utah Utes (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • BYU Cougars (2-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • UCF Knights (2-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • TCU Horned Frogs (2-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • Arizona State Sun Devils (2-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • Baylor Bears (2-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • Cincinnati Bearcats (2-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • Kansas Jayhawks (2-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • West Virginia Mountaineers (2-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys (1-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
  • Colorado Buffaloes (1-2 overall, 0-1 Big 12)
  • Kansas State Wildcats (1-3 overall, 0-1 Big 12)

Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders are in a good spot at the moment. Yes, the Cyclones and Houston sit atop the conference with that early advantage in the form of a 1-0 Big 12 conference record tie, but the Red Raiders are unbeaten and will get a shot at a conference foe this weekend when they head to Salt Lake City to meet up with the Utah Utes.

Also, Texas Tech isn’t facing the uphill battle for bowl eligibility that some other teams in the conference are already looking at. Kansas State and Colorado are both at the bottom of the league at the moment and both were expected to contend for the conference crown this year. That likely won’t happen.

Things are about to heat up in the Big 12 and it’s going to be fascinating to see how it all plays out. The Red Raiders will need to get a win this weekend to help secure their spot at the top of the conference. Here’s to hoping that that happens.
