It’s pretty far from ideal the way that the Texas Tech Lady Raiders lost to one of the least impressive teams in the Big 12 up to this point. On Saturday, the unbeaten Texas Tech women’s basketball team lost at home by six points to a Kansas State Wildcats team that was previously just sitting at .500 on the season.
And there are a number of reasons for that.
Texas Tech seemingly was unable to get a rebound (and was outrebounded by a margin of 46-20), the Lady Raiders struggled in second-chance points (Kansas State had a 14-3 advantage here), and the Wildcats managed to double up on Texas Tech in points in the paint (28 to 14 in K-State’s favor).
That’s all not great! And it impacted the Big 12 standings in some rather intriguing ways.
Big 12 women’s basketball standings update: Texas Tech tied with TCU and Baylor for top spot following loss to Kansas State
Here’s what the Big 12 women’s basketball standings look like with the Texas Tech loss to the Kansas State Wildcats in the books:
- Texas Tech Lady Raiders (19-1 overall, 6-1 Big 12)
- TCU Horned Frogs (18-1 overall, 6-1 Big 12)
- Baylor Bears (17-3 overall, 6-1 Big 12)
- Utah Utes (14-5 overall, 5-2 Big 12)
- Oklahoma State Cowgirls (16-4 overall, 5-2 Big 12)
- West Virginia Mountaineers (15-4 overall, 5-2 Big 12)
- Arizona State Sun Devils (17-2 overall, 4-2 Big 12)
- BYU Cougars (14-4 overall, 3-3 Big 12)
- Colorado Buffaloes (12-7 overall, 3-4 Big 12)
- Kansas State Wildcats (10-9 overall, 3-3 Big 12)
- Iowa State Cyclones (14-5 overall, 2-5 Big 12)
- UCF Knights (10-8 overall, 2-5 Big 12)
- Cincinnati Bearcats (7-12 overall, 2-5 Big 12)
- Arizona Wildcats (10-7 overall, 1-5 Big 12)
- Kansas Jayhawks (11-8 overall, 1-6 Big 12)
- Houston Cougars (6-12 overall, 0-7 Big 12)
It really looks like the top end of the Big 12 women’s basketball championship race is going to be a fascinating one to keep up with. The fact of the matter is, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, Utah, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia are all in really solid spots overall to be able to make a run for the conference crown.
And it’d be nice if Texas Tech would find a way to pull away from the rest of the Big 12. I’m not sure that’s going to happen after the Lady Raiders’ loss to Kansas State. Texas Tech has got to figure out how to avoid having that happen again.
