If it seems like Joey McGuire, the head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, is looking forward to seeing his team face off against the Houston Cougars this weekend, that’s because he sure is excited about this Week 6 matchup.

In a press conference on Monday, McGuire made it clear to media members that he believes this is a big game for the Big 12.

“I’m so excited to go to Houston,” McGuire explained. “This is big, this is a big game for the Big 12. “You’ve got two undefeated teams, it’s going to be on ESPN. Both teams are playing really, really well on the defensive side of the ball, so it’s going to be a great game.”

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire sure seems excited about facing the Houston Cougars in Week 6

Part of the reason that Texas Tech’s head coach is looking forward to this game against Houston happens to be because of who the head coach of the Cougars is.

“For me being a, y’all know I’m a college and high school football geek, I’m coaching against one of the best coaches,” McGuire said of Willie Fritz. “You know, he’s got 250-plus wins, he’s won at every level. He’s coached from junior college to now at Houston. I’m a big fan.”

And yeah, Fritz has done a great job all throughout his career and year two of his time in Houston sure seems to be going pretty smoothly as the head coach of the Cougars has UH at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play.

Fritz wins. He’s won just about everywhere. And right now, he’s winning with the Coogs. But, just because the Cougars are winning doesn’t mean that they’ll have complete and total control of their homefield this weekend.

“We’re expecting a sold-out crowd and we’re hoping that at least half of that crowd are Red Raiders and we make a lot of noise,” McGuire said.

It’s theoretically plausible. There are a ton of Texas Tech fans floating around the Greater Houston Metropolitan area and this is a good chance for them to see the Red Raiders in person without having to drive around nine hours.
