As expectations for what is possible for the Red Raiders in 2025 seem to wildly vary depending on who you ask, there’s a general feeling that Joey McGuire and the 2025 Texas Tech football team should be capable of accomplishing quite a bit.

The ceiling feels pretty high for the Red Raiders this season. But it remains to be seen if Texas Tech can actually reach that ceiling.

The College Football Playoff is thrown around a bit with regards to what the Red Raiders are theoretically capable of. Playing in the Big 12 means Texas Tech is in a very interesting league that is full of parity but also theoretically paves a path to the playoffs because the schedule isn’t as difficult as it could be elsewhere in other conferences.

So, can Texas Tech have a great year and get to the College Football Playoff in 2025? It does seem possible. Heck, ESPN’s Allstate Playoff Predictor has the Red Raiders listed among the 32 teams in the country that have at least a 10 percent chance of getting there.

And that counts for something.

As ESPN’s Heather Dinich writes, the Red Raiders “are a CFP sleeper team, but not as far from a shot as the computers indicate.”

And what exactly are the magical math munching computers indicating?

Well, right now, ESPN Analytics has the Red Raiders with a 10.3 percent chance of making it to the College Football Playoff. The Red Raiders are No. 32 on this list of 32 teams in the Big 12 with at least a 10 percent chance of getting to the College Football Playoff this season.

Which, you know, being in last place among the top teams in the country doesn’t exactly feel all that spectacular. But the Red Raiders are there. And as Dinich points out, the path to actually getting there is going to be a little tough, but it isn’t impossible.

If Texas Tech can take care of both Arizona State and Kansas State, as Dinish suggests would be important for the Red Raider’s chances of getting to the 2025 CFP, then we’re talking about a pretty solid season for McGuire and his team. And we’re probably talking about the College Football Playoff at that point as well.
