It’s still early in the 2025 college football season. Super early, in fact. Not much has really happened so far this season (and yet, for some teams, it feels like a lot has happened). For Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders, a lot of points have been scored so far through just two weeks of play.
Along with that, it’s starting to feel like folks outside of Lubbock are starting to believe in what this team can do this year.
The fine folks over at CBS Sports have been paying pretty close attention to Texas Tech so far this season and it sure looks like they are appreciating what McGuire and the Red Raiders are theoretically capable of accomplishing.
Like making the College Football Playoff, for example. They seem to think that Texas Tech can do that this season (which would be great to see). And as for who CBS Sports is lining Texas Tech up with in the 1st round of the 2025 College Football Playoff?
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
CBS Sports puts Texas Tech Red Raiders in College Football Playoff 1st round matchup against Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Unlike Texas Tech, Notre Dame is not unbeaten at the moment (admittedly, they’ve played a tougher schedule so far and lost to a really impressive Miami Hurricanes team in week 1). But this is definitely a matchup that would be interesting to see. It’s not like we get many meetings between the Red Raiders and the Fighting Irish.
As for the rest of the projected College Football Playoff seeding?
- Ohio State Buckeyes vs. TBD in CFP Quarterfinal - Rose Bowl
- LSU Tigers vs. TBD in CFP Quarterfinal - Sugar Bowl
- Miami Hurricanes vs. TBD in CFP Quarterfinal - Orange Bowl
- Penn State Nittany Lions vs. TBD in CFP Quarterfinal - Cotton Bowl
- No. 5 seed Georgia Bulldogs vs. No. 12 USF Bulls - CFP 1st Round
- No. 6 seed Oregon Ducks vs. No. 11 seed South Carolina Gamecocks - CFP 1st Round
- No. 7 seed Texas Longhorns vs. No. 10 seed Florida State Seminoles - CFP 1st Round
- No. 8 Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. No. 9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish - CFP 1st Round
That, my friends, would be a fascinating lineup of games for the College Football Playoff this season. And I’d get on board with that. I’m not sure if I fully agree with everything there (FSU feels like it should be higher and I’m not sold on South Carolina at the moment, but that could change). Still, I think this would be fun (even if I do feel like the playoffs shouldn’t be expanded to this point).
