While CBS Sports doesn’t have Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders making it into the College Football Playoffs this season as part of their 2025 preseason bowl projections, the Red Raiders are still far better off than some of the other teams in the Big 12.

There are a number of Big 12 teams that CBS Sports currently doesn’t have making it into the postseason at all. We’re talking about six teams that currently aren’t expected to have any fun in bowl games this season, according to the good folks over at CBS Sports.

That would seem like it would be half of the Big 12 if numbers and conference names actually made sense. But, uh, just a reminder that there are MORE THAN 12 teams currently in the Big 12. We’ve got 16 members in the conference now.

That includes Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Colorado, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, Utah, and West Virginia. And according to CBS Sports and their preseason bowl projections, six of those teams won’t be bowling this year.

2025 preseason Big 12 bowl projections: Iowa State to represent Big 12 in College Football Playoffs, Texas Tech headed to Pop-Tarts Bowl

The preseason bowl predictions from CBS has Iowa State in the College Football Playoff picture while Kansas State and Texas Tech compete in the Alamo Bowl and Pop-Tarts bowl respectively. The Baylor Bears are apparently going to Houston to compete in the Texas Bowl while TCU gets the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

BYU is currently slated for the Independence Bowl against Oregon State as Kansas will be in Memphis for the Liberty Bowl against the Missouri Tigers. Arizona State will apparently be in the Las Vegas Bowl against Nebraska while Utah is headed to the Los Angeles Bowl.

And that leaves the likes of the following on the outside looking in:

  • Arizona
  • UCF
  • Cincinnati
  • Colorado
  • Houston
  • Oklahoma State

We’ll see how all of this pans out. This is, of course, still very, very early. These are preseason projections. They’re not set in stone. Games are still to be played.
