I probably don’t even have to tell you who this is about. Context clues really help remove any mystery here. There’s only one Texas Tech legend currently playing quarterback in the NFL at a “transcendent talent” sort of level and his name is Patrick Mahomes.

We’re still in the offseason and there’s still plenty to discuss as the season gets closer and closer. And right now, we can go ahead and start examining some preseason NFL coverage, like the sort of tiered quarterback rankings from the good folks over at CBS Sports.

And in those tiered quarterback rankings, provided by CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin, we find Mahomes sitting at the top of the pack. It makes sense. The man is the best quarterback in the NFL right now. He’s a dynamic talent who has thrived throughout the entirety of his NFL career up to this point.

It’s been great for Texas Tech football fans to watch (and also it’s been great for Texas Tech with the way that Mahomes has been so present and active in connecting with the Red Raiders even though he’s now thriving with the Kansas City Chiefs).

CBS Sports ranks Texas Tech legend Patrick Mahomes among the top tier of quarterbacks in NFL ahead of 2025-2026 season

The soon-to-be 30-year-old quarterback heading into his ninth season in the NFL has managed to win three Super Bowls, make it to six Pro Bowls, and earn Super Bowl MVP honors on three different occasions. He’s been named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player on two occasions and was the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2018.

Mahomes has accomplished quite a bit during his NFL career. It makes a ton of sense for him to be ranked at the top of anyone’s NFL quarterback rankings ahead of this season. He’s certainly earned that spot with the way he’s played throughout his career.
