Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders have a ton to be proud of right now. As we enter the 14th week of the 2025 college football regular season, the Red Raider football program is getting closer and closer to sitting near the top of just about everything.

Right now, the College Football Playoff projections from CBS Sports pits the Red Raiders against the North Texas Mean Green in an opening round of the playoffs. And while that’s not great, it’s far from being one of the worst things ever.

First and foremost, we’re talking about College Football Playoff projections. Secondly, we’re talking about two teams with a fairly notable talent deficit (at least on paper). And North Texas is currently navigating losing its head coach to the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Things are interesting right now in the world of college football.

CBS Sports College Football Playoff projection in Week 14 places Texas Tech in a matchup with the North Texas Mean Green

Here’s what the opening round of the College Football Playoff would look like, according to the CBS Sports projection:

  • No. 5 Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. No. 12 North Texas Mean Green
  • No. 6 Oregon Ducks vs. No. 11 SMU Mustangs
  • No. 7 Oklahoma Sooners vs. No. 10 Alabama Crimson Tide
  • No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. No. 9 Ole Miss Rebels

And of course, here’s what the Week 14 College Football Playoff projections from CBS Sports put the top four seeds:

  • No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes vs. TBD in the Rose Bowl
  • No. 2 Texas A&M Aggies vs. TBD in the Sugar Bowl
  • No. 3 Indiana Hoosiers vs. TBD in the Orange Bowl
  • No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs vs. TBD in the Cotton Bowl

Obviously I’d prefer it if Texas Tech was ranked a bit higher (and there’s still a chance that the Red Raiders might end up moving up a bit if things continue at their current rate). That said, this is a good spot for McGuire and his Texas Tech football team. We’ll see how everything pans out sooner rather than later.
