Rolling into the 2025 Texas Tech football season, the Red Raiders are getting plenty of attention for the way they overhauled their roster. Most notably, the Texas Tech coaching staff was able to haul in a remarkable group on the defensive front that should put the Red Raiders in position to have arguably the best defense we’ve seen in Lubbock in quite some time.

Last season’s eight wins were decent, but Texas Tech fans want more from Joey McGuire and his Texas Tech football team (particularly on the defensive side of things). The Red Raiders, thanks to the help of some really impressive boosters pouring resources into the program, managed to bring in the most impressive transfer portal class in the country.

Those additions, particularly on the defensive line, are getting the Red Raiders some attention this offseason. Take Brock Oseweiler, for example, who noted how Texas Tech’s defensive line could be among the most impressive in college football this season.

Brock Osweiler highlights how Texas Tech has one of the most intimidating defensive lines in college football this season

“Your defensive line is one of the scariest in college football,” Osweiler noted about Texas Tech during the 2025 Big 12 media days.

And how will that translate to success on the field throughout the season? Well, Osweiler drew an interesting comparison to a pretty interesting team.

“Look at who won the Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles,” Osweiler explained. “And how did they do that? One of the biggest reasons was how dominant they were on their defensive front. When I look at the Texas Tech defensive front, there’s some similarities there.”

That’s a pretty solid compliment for Shiel Wood’s defense to get. The Red Raiders will need to obviously live up to a pretty high standard, but there are certainly worse things for a Texas Tech defense to be compared to (as we are all more than familiar with).

It’s going to be fun to see how Texas Tech’s defense looks this season and Osweiler is right in pointing out that the defensive line is going to be a force that other teams need to reckon with. The additions of guys like David Bailey, Romello Height, and Lee Hunter (all of whom were four-star transfers), along with all of the other portal defensive linemen should help out in a huge way.
