It’s always great to see Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders go out and beat the likes of the Georgia Bulldogs for a 5-star recruit for the state of Georgia. And that certainly happened Thursday afternoon as McGuire and Texas Tech picked up a commitment from LaDamion Guyton out of Savannah, Georgia.
Guyton, rated as a 5-star according to Rivals and a 4-star according to 247Sports, obviously drew plenty of recruiting interest from teams in the South. And instead, it looks like he’s currently interested in playing out in West Texas.
I mean, we’re talking about Guyton picking Texas Tech over offers from the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, Tennessee Volunteers, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers, and South Carolina Gamecocks.
And that’s without us getting into the many other schools across the country who were also interested in Guyton. That’s just in the South. And that’s incredible to see.

Of course, there were jokes (and a little bit of commentary) about how much the Red Raiders (and other top spending teams) are pouring money into their recruiting efforts.

Not that Texas isn’t recruiting well, but I’d be so annoyed with Tech coming out of nowhere like this lol

We’ve got folks making jokes about SEC fans getting tired of supporting the oil money that is helping fund Texas Tech’s recent recruiting run.

This is a fascinating moment for the Red Raiders (and college football in general) and it’s a ton of fun to see Texas Tech get this sort of recruiting momentum. It’s a true thrill to see the Red Raiders beat out a team like the Georgia Bulldogs for this commitment.
Now, I say this just about every time there’s a commitment, but there’s a long time between now and signing day (and that is definitely more than true for a commit for the 2027 recruiting cycle). It’ll be a little bit before we see this commitment turn into a player being on campus out in Lubbock. Still, it’s great to see the Red Raiders have this momentum in this recruiting cycle.
