I don’t think you’re typically going to find the chairman of a university’s board of regents who is willing to go out and publicly call out another institution in the same state over comments on a college football schedule. I just don’t think that’s going to be a common sort of occurrence. But that’s exactly what Cody Campbell and the Texas Tech Red Raiders did.
And it’s something that Texas Tech football fans are certainly over the moon about. Texas football fans, on the other hand, aren’t so fond of the Red Raiders or the way that Campbell is taking a shot at the Longhorns.
To catch everyone up. This all started after Steve Sarkisian took an apparent shot at the Red Raiders and their schedule for the coming season. Joey McGuire and Cody Campbell are now responding and this whole deal is really catching plenty of attention from college football fans (and media members) all over the place.
College football media members react as the Red Raiders take their shot at the Texas Longhorns
Gotta get you on the show brother

Steve Sarkisian talked a LOT of smack about Texas Tech earlier this week.
— Aaron Torres (@Aaron_Torres) May 28, 2026
Texas Tech now offering to buy both Texas and Texas Tech out of their Week 1 games to make it happen.
Credit to Texas Tech for stepping up to the plate. Let's see if Sark backs up his words https://t.co/c5T0ed3sOX
Texas has to take this… right? https://t.co/BygqgwSCY8

A situation like this feels truly rare, to be completely honest. The college football offseason often produces drama, but rarely something like this. Typically it’s just recruiting-related shenanigans. Not a university offering to foot the bill to buy out two early season games to make a matchup happen in the upcoming season.
THIS IS THE GREATEST SPORT IN THE WORLD https://t.co/yV5GXbJnVC

Texas already has probably the most difficult schedule of all time in 2026. By far the funniest outcome is if as a result of their coach complaining about this, they replace their easiest game with a top 4 team from last year. https://t.co/HzDCqUXDX3

This has gone straight WWE… https://t.co/4olvpjQQvM

I can’t think of a comparable situation between schools and university leaders and such. Not off the top of my head, at least. It’s normal for rivalries to warm up a bit and for jokes to be cracked, but something like this? That’s just unique.
Texas is backed into a corner now. They have to play the game right?! https://t.co/kgHHEg0PmV

Please make this happen…

Who DOESN’T want Tech vs UT in Week 1 at Jerry’s World?? https://t.co/rphMqrmNci
At this point, I think a ton of folks would be all in on the thought of getting to see the Red Raiders and Longhorns face off. I mean, Texas football fans excluded, of course. For the most part, they don't seem as keen about the thought of the Longhorns and Red Raiders facing one another.
Everyone else though? This is great.
I’m not always in lockstep with Cody.

But after Sark threw shade at Texas Tech…
He has not choice to have his team cash the check his mouth wrote. https://t.co/5bDJf1X31U
And it’s definitely getting college football media members focused in on this situation (which might actually be what the Red Raiders want instead of the situation with Brendan Sorsby and his battle with the NCAA).
You can buy ours out at Texas in 2029 at your convenience also 🤣. We are here to help. We want to help you make sure it’s not a one time thing.
— Sean Tuohy Jr. (@SJTuohy) May 29, 2026
Also, apparently Sean Tuohy Jr. wants in on all of this. The athletics director for the ULM Warhawks wouldn’t be upset about his university getting some money to avoid paying the Texas Longhorns in the future.
