Another week, another dominant win for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football team. This time, it wasn’t at home. And this time, it wasn’t against a cupcake. Texas Tech just went into Salt Lake City and handed the Utes a 24-point loss.
It truly was an impressive showing for the Red Raiders all around. Texas Tech lost its starting quarterback in the third quarter as Behren Morton got dinged up following a couple of hard hits from the Utes. And still, Will Hammond was able to thrive in the 4th quarter for the Red Raiders.
With Hammond at quarterback for Texas Tech’s offense, the Red Raiders were able to outscore the Utes 24-7. And that scoring surge was significant. It helped showcase just how good this Texas Tech team can be. It was impressive to watch as it happened.
And college football media members feel the same way.

Texas Tech went to Utah and straight up bullied the Utes, even with a backup QB. What a statement by the Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders needed this sort of statement win. They absolutely did. Texas Tech clearly showed the full extent of its potential this afternoon as the Red Raiders were able to outlast Utah and withstand everything the Utes could throw at them.
Texas Tech didn't pursue portal QBs this offseason because they believe in Behren Morton AND Will Hammond.

What an effort from QB2 today: 169 passing yards, 61 rushing yards and 2 TDs to pull away for the 34-10 win at Utah. pic.twitter.com/fwx5VT7R3h
Tackle-breaking TD run is the dagger: Texas Tech will win in Salt Lake City. Red Raiders will move to 4-0, with a legit defense, couple of stud running backs and, it appears, great QB depth.

Of all the people to play hero Saturday here in Utah, it was Will Hammond - Texas Tech’s “dude” of a backup QB, a self-proclaimed Mountain Man and Mormon who spent family summers in the Wasatch Range.

The big-spending Red Raiders & their QB(s) are 4-0.https://t.co/DiFamWLqLj
Hammond was remarkable. The Red Raiders absolutely thrived on offense because of the way he was able to just effortlessly step in and take control against a defense from Utah that had played a really physical game up to that point.
Fans are hitting the exit at Rice-Eccles after Tech picks up a first down with under four minutes left. Then Red Raiders score a touchdown off some broken tackles to empty the place out.

From a one-score, defensive minded game to a rout at Rice-Eccles.

Things look good for the Red Raiders right now. They just went on the road, faced off against one of the best teams (and definitely one of the most physically imposing defenses) in the Big 12, and walked away with a lopsided win. For Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders, there’s plenty to be proud of right now.
