Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are in a great spot right now. After Texas Tech easily handled business against the then No. 7 ranked BYU Cougars and secured a 22-point win on Saturday (all nine of Texas Tech’s wins have been by 22 or more points, by the way), the Red Raiders took control of the Big 12 championship race.
Texas Tech also did more than enough to prove that it belonged among the top six teams in the country right now.
At least, that’s what they did according to the College Football Playoff committee.

Again, the Red Raiders are in a great spot.
That said, there are a few things worth noting that don’t necessarily warrant freaking out about just yet. Yes, there are some complications with their offense having both Behren Morton and Will Hammond being injured (with Morton playing dinged up and Hammond out for the remainder of the season). Yes, quarterback depth is thin and the offense has been a bit shaky as of late.
Yes, I get all of that.
And still, Texas Tech is proving that it can win games by just smothering opponents with a great defense and a strong running game. And this time of year, with the way the weather is turning, that’s not the worst way to win a game. I feel good about Texas Tech right now. The College Football Playoff committee seems to as well.
