In 2014, Texas Tech Red Raiders running back DeAndre Washington managed to get the Red Raiders back on the map when it came to producing players who could run for 1000 or more yards in a single season. And in 2015, Washington found a way to improve upon just about everything that he had accomplished in the season prior.
Washington’s overall performance in 2015 remains one of the most productive seasons a running back has provided to the Texas Tech football program as he managed to gash opponents on a very regular basis.
Washington went from producing 1103 yards and two touchdowns on 188 carries in 2014 to running for 1492 yards and a total of 14 touchdowns on 233 attempts in 2015. That, my friends, is a considerable and impressive improvement from one season to the next.
Texas Tech football history: DeAndre Washington drastically improved from 2014 to 2015
The 1492 yards that Washington ran for back in 2015 still stands as the seventh most any Red Raider has produced in an individual season. And it really is impressive that Washington was able to get 6.4 yards per carry and 114.8 yards per game in the process.
Washington managed to record six different games where he put up at least 100 rushing yards. That list includes against UT-El Paso (138 yards), the TCU Horned Frogs (188 yards), the Kansas Jayhawks (157 yards), the West Virginia Mountaineers (102 yards), the Kansas State Wildcats (248 yards) and the Texas Longhorns (173 yards).
And all of this came while Washington had Patrick Mahomes alongside him as they operated Kliff Kingsbury’s version of the Air Raid offense, which is still pretty pass happy. So this sort of production is still really impressive to see.
Washington’s career was really solid as a whole as well. He played for Texas Tech at an interesting point in program history and was a huge reason for the offensive success that the Red Raiders saw during that era.
