With JT Toppin out for the remainder of the season, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are absolutely being forced to change the way they go about business in so many different ways. Not the least of which is scoring.
That’s a pretty big deal. You know, it’s kind of a necessary thing to be able to win college basketball games.
And as the Red Raiders faced the Kansas State Wildcats in Lubbock on Saturday, Donovan Atwell led the way for the Texas Tech men’s basketball team. In the process, Atwell also managed to break a three point shooting record for Texas Tech. Nobody in the history of the Texas Tech men’s basketball program has made more three pointers in a single season.
And there’s still several games left up ahead to be played for the Red Raiders with Atwell playing an increasingly important role for Texas Tech’s offense.
Donovan Atwell reaches 100 threes as he led the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a dominant home win over Kansas State
When Texas Tech faced the Wildcats, Atwell managed to score a season-high 26 points on an incredibly efficient and effective 8-of-11 shooting. Atwell was on fire in this game as he made six shots from behind the three point line and played a key role in Texas Tech’s 100-72 win over Kansas State.
Prior to Texas Tech’s victory on Saturday, Atwell was tied for the record with Coby Carr at 94 threes in a single season. And then with his thrilling performance against the Wildcats to lead Texas Tech to a win, Atwell managed to become the first Red Raider to ever drain 100 threes in a single season.
As Texas Tech continues to refine its gameplans moving forward in light of Toppin being sidelined for the remainder of the season, Atwell performing at this sort of level of excellence shows that there are several options that Grant McCasland can turn to as needed.
This explosive play was exactly what the Red Raiders needed. Now we’ll see if Texas Tech and Atwell can keep it up moving forward.
