This weekend was a fascinating one for college football. Across the country, we got to see a number of highly ranked teams suffer losses in games that were close and exciting. And for Texas Tech football fans, that had to be fun to sit back and enjoy.
Partially because the chaos didn’t involve the Red Raiders losing (shoutout to the bye week) and partially because it involved teams ranked ahead of Texas Tech.
Because a number of teams ranked ahead of the Red Raiders lost, (and Texas Tech just simply didn’t have a game scheduled) that means that Texas Tech got to experience a bit of a bump in the rankings and also the way people perceive the program as it stands right now. The Red Raiders are still unbeaten. A few other folks lost.
And that includes the SEC blue blood program that ESPN college football analyst Kyle Bonagura is putting Texas Tech in a matchup with in a hypothetical College Football Playoff.
College Football Playoff projections, Week 6: ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura sets Texas Tech up with Georgia Bulldogs
Following all the fun that happened in Week 5, like Georgia’s close home loss against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Bonagura is putting the Bulldogs into the College Football Playoff as the No. 10 seeded team. And then he’s got Texas Tech with the No. 7 seed.
That would put the two teams in a hypothetical matchup in Lubbock in December. Personally, I’d love to see that happen.
There’s still plenty of football left for everyone to play and there will be plenty of wins and losses to go around moving forward. I have no clue what will actually happen as we move forward, but I definitely would welcome the possibility of seeing a team like Georgia (who has dominated in recent years) meeting up with a bit of an underdog and upstart like Texas Tech.
