Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders sure seem to have control over what happens to them down the stretch of this season. After beating the BYU Cougars last weekend and now securing a remarkably lopsided win over Scott Frost and the UCF Knights, Texas Tech has by far the best shot to win the Big 12 this season.

At least that’s what ESPN’s Football Power Index seems to think. And I seem to agree with those math munching, number crunching computer calculations. Right now, if you ask ESPN’s FPI what shot the Red Raiders have at coming out on top of the conference, it’s just shy of 70 percent.

There’s not another Big 12 team even remotely closer to where the Red Raiders sit right now, according to ESPN’s FPI.

Texas Tech is the overwhelming favorite to win the Big 12 after the Red Raiders crushed the UCF Knights, according to ESPN FPI

With the latest ESPN FPI numbers, the Red Raiders are being given a 69.5 percent chance of winning the Big 12. Here’s how the five teams that have a shot of coming out on top of the conference (according to ESPN’s FPI) stack up right now:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 69.5 percent
  • BYU Cougars - 24.4 percent
  • Utah Utes - 4.7 percent
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 1.2 percent
  • Cincinnati Bearcats - 0.1 percent

And that’s it. Everyone else is being given a 0.0 percent chance of winning the Big 12 right now. McGuire and the Texas Tech football team should certainly feel pretty good about where they stand right now, but they shouldn’t take that for granted.

The BYU Cougars will obviously want revenge if they’re presented with the opportunity. Same with the Utah Utes. Arizona State will present the Red Raiders with a chance at redemption, which would be nice to get. And then there’s Cincinnati, just kind of hanging out.
