Well, the Texas Tech Red Raiders don’t have the Big 12’s top team in the latest edition of the ESPN Football Power Index Rankings. The Red Raiders are still pretty solid, but they aren’t sitting above the rest of their conference.
Instead, Texas Tech is sitting above almost the entirety of the rest of the Big 12. There is just one team above the Red Raiders, who currently hold on to the No. 20 spot in the overall rankings.
As we head into Week 6 of the 2025 college football season, here’s what the Big 12 looks like in the most recent ESPN FPI rankings:
Texas Tech is the No. 2 ranked Big 12 team according to latest ESPN FPI rankings
- BYU Cougars (No. 18 overall)
- Texas Tech Red Raiders (No. 20 overall)
- Utah Utes (No. 22 overall)
- TCU Horned Frogs (No. 25 overall)
- Iowa State Cyclones (No. 28 overall)
- Arizona State Sun Devils (No. 29 overall)
- Kansas Jayhawks (No. 31 overall)
- Cincinnati Bearcats (No. 39 overall)
- Baylor Bears (No. 41 overall)
- Kansas State Wildcats (No. 44 overall)
- UCF Knights (No. 49 overall)
- Arizona Wildcats (No. 52 overall)
- Houston Cougars (No. 53 overall)
- Colorado Buffaloes (No. 56 overall)
- West Virginia Mountaineers (No. 82 overall)
- Oklahoma State Cowboys (No. 106 overall)
It’s interesting to see how the Houston Cougars, though unbeaten at 4-0 and fresh off of a win over the Oregon State Beavers, dropped a bit in these FPI rankings. Prior to that overtime win on the road against a winless Oregon State team, Houston was sitting at No. 47 overall. Now, they’re sitting at No. 53 and they’re behind a few teams with plenty of losses.
Also, BYU got a win, but those Cougars didn’t budge in their rankings. They moved as much as Texas Tech, who was on a bye week, moved this week.
As for the Red Raiders, if Texas Tech can go to Houston and get a win over the Cougars, then they should (hopefully, maybe, possibly) move to some sort of degree? I would think? I don't know anymore. We'll see soon enough, I suppose.
