As the Texas Tech Red Raiders continue on through what has been an absolutely thrilling season to keep up with, Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders have one more regular season game to play. This weekend, the Texas Tech football team is heading east to take on Rich Rodriguez and the West Virignia Mountaineers in Morgantown.

At 10-1 overall and 7-1 in Big 12 play, the Red Raiders are currently at the top of the Big 12 (and for good reason). This is a roster that is loaded with talent and well-coached. With Shiel Wood as the Red Raiders’ defensive coordinator and Mack Leftwich orchestrating the offense, this is a team that is poised to thrive (and also very, very fun to watch).

We’re talking about a group that is averaging 42.6 points per game (good for third best in the country) while holding opponents to 12.3 points per game (good for fourth best in the country). Again, this is a fun team to watch.

And the head coach of the Red Raiders certainly knows that.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire openly invites new fans to fall in love with the Red Raiders

During a recent episode of the “What’s Next! with Joey McGuire” podcast, Robert Giovanetti (McGuire’s co-host of the show) made it clear that it’d be great to see more fans continue to show up and support the Red Raiders.

“Give me the bandwagon fans, right?” Giovanetti said. “I’m not a snob. I think if you don’t have a rooting interest in a school and you knew about Texas Tech and knew what you’ve got going on here and what we’ve got going on across the board, all of our sports, you become a Texas Tech fan.”

Texas Tech’s head coach followed that up by agreeing and making it clear that he loves Texas Tech fans and is definitely open to seeing this fanbase continue to grow.

“I mean, the great thing about our fans, they’re just hardworking, blue-collar, just tough, gritty people that love their university.” McGuire explained. “Why not want to be a part of that?”

McGuire then continued to explain so much of what makes Texas Tech fans great: the fact that they aren’t entitled.

“You know, I’ve never felt at any point that there's a sense of entitlement,” he continued. “There’s fanbases that definitely have that.”

For a head coach, I’m sure that’s certainly something to enjoy and embrace. I’m sure that it makes everything more manageable when dealing with healthy and fair expectations across an entire group.

“You know, I think that’s one great thing about our fanbase, man,” McGuire said. “You know, I think you ought to want to be a part of it.”

And as McGuire continued to share his pitch for why folks should fall in love with Texas Tech, there is a pretty straightforward, practical reason as well.

“The one thing I tell everybody is everybody looks good in red and black,” McGuire said.

It’s hard to argue too much with that. Seems like sound logic to me.
