It looks like Behren Morton is about to be back in action for the Texas Tech football team. The starting quarterback for the Red Raiders has seen a few injuries throughout the entirety of his career and it looks like he’s available after his most recent injury from Texas Tech’s road game against the Utah Utes.
That’s good news! Really good news. Morton has been effective in connecting with receivers and executing Mack Leftwich’s offense all throughout the season.
And also, it should be noted that it’s good that the Red Raiders were able to still win (and also thrive on offense) without their starting quarterback. Backup quarterback Will Hammond was exciting to watch against the Utes (and he got Red Raider fans excited about the future of this offense).
But that doesn’t mean that Morton shouldn’t be the starter. Just because the backup quarterback is exciting doesn't mean that it's wise to focus on him over the seasoned starter.
At least not yet.
Texas Tech offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich seems thrilled to get starting quarterback Behren Morton back vs. Houston
Leftwich made it clear that he wants Morton back on the field (healthy, that is) and competing in the way that the Red Raiders’ starting quarterback was doing prior to getting hurt on the road against the Utes.
“I just want him to get back to playing like he was before he got hurt,” Leftwich said. “I think he was playing efficient, he was making good decisions, playing with a lot of confidence.”
All of those things are things you want your starting quarterback to do. And while fans got to be enamored with what they saw from backup quarterback Will Hammond in Salt Lake City on Saturday, that doesn’t mean that Morton hasn’t also been really solid throughout the season so far (when he’s been healthy).
“He was back out there last night throwing the ball around and looked good, looked confident,” Leftwich explained. “So excited to get him back out there.”
It’s going to be fascinating to see how Morton plays now that he’s able to get back on the field for the Red Raiders.
