While the first round of the College Football Playoff will get the lion's share of the sports headlines today, the NFL is also in action with two big-time matchups. One of those games will see the Kansas City Chiefs and former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II take on the Houston Texans at noon Central.
One member of the Chiefs turned some heads by wearing a Texas Tech jersey when he arrived at the stadium in Kansas City and it wasn't Mahomes or his best friend, tight end Travis Kelce. Rather, former Texas Longhorn standout Xavier Worthy showed up rocking one of the Mahomes brand galvanized gray jerseys that Tech wore against Colorado last month.
Of course, Worthy was wearing Mahomes old college number, No. 5. That garnered quite the reaction from Texas Tech fans on social media.
It is interesting that on the same day that his alma mater will be hosting Clemson in the first round of the College Football Playoff, Worthy decided to go with the Mahomes Texas Tech jersey. Maybe that was an attempt to get in Mahomes' good graces prior to the game in the hopes that Mahomes would get the ball to Worth early and often against the Texans.
A rookie this season, Worthy was the No. 1 pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in this year's NFL Draft. As the No. 28 overall pick, he entered the season with quite a bit of expectation, especially after running the fastest 40-yard dash time in the history of the NFL Combine.
There has been a bit of a learning curve, for Worthy, though. Appearing in 14 games thus far, he's caught 44 passes for 494 yards and four touchdowns (he's second on the team in both receiving yards and TD catches) while rushing 15 times for 84 yards and three more scores.
However, he hasn't exactly set the NFL on fire the way some thought he might. In fact, the entire Chief's offense has been somewhat of a disappointment this season.
Still, Worthy has helped the Chiefs to an NFL-best 13-1 record. Of course, he wants to be a big part of another win on Saturday and maybe he was sending a message to his starting quarterback by wearing a Mahomes brand jersey as he arrived for pregame warmups. After all, it is always a great idea to be on your quarterback's good side, especially when you are a rookie wide receiver.
