With the way that Mike Leach and his Air Raid offense influenced the way football is played, it’s not surprising to see former Texas Tech assistants and quarterbacks make their way into some pretty impressive positions. That said, some former Texas Tech assistants and quarterbacks might be facing a bit of pressure rolling into the 2025 college football season.
Take Sonny Cumbie for example. He’s the perfect example. His offense hasn’t exactly scored many points over in Ruston and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs haven’t had anything that resembled meaningful success under his guidance so far.
And that’s going to eventually frustrate some folks unless he’s able to turn it around sooner rather than later.
Former Texas Tech offensive coordinator, interim head coach Sonny Cumbie likely on the hot seat at Louisiana Tech in 2025
The good folks over at CBS Sports as well as FanSided’s very own Saturday Blitz have both listed Cumbie on the hot seat as Louisiana Tech heads into the 2025 season. It really seems like this is a year that the Bulldogs have to find a way to make a splash in conference play, get the offense rolling, and scrap together a few wins here and there.
Cumbie, a legendary quarterback who played for Leach and torched defenses along the way, had a solid stretch as TTU’s interim head coach, including a Liberty Bowl win over his former head coach and a depleted Mississippi State Bulldogs team.
And ever since that dominant win over MSU in Memphis, Cumbie has an 11-26 record overall and an 8-16 record in Conference USA play. Cumbie’s Bulldogs scored just 20.9 points per game in 2024, which is certainly less than ideal. In fact, Louisiana Tech’s offenses have gotten worse in each of Cumbie’s seasons so far.
There is still time for Cumbie to turn things around, but the winning will almost certainly need to start sooner rather than later for the former Texas Tech quarterback.
