Given that Behren Morton has been in Lubbock for a few years and was the starting quarterback for Texas Tech, it shouldn’t shock anyone that he’d be pretty fond of his former head coach, Joey McGuire.
And as Morton stood at the podium in Lubbock one last time during Texas Tech’s pro day, the former Texas Tech quarterback had some pretty big predictions for the Red Raiders under McGuire’s leadership as they continue to move forward as a program.
With Morton as the quarterback, Texas Tech broke through and won the Big 12 championship for the first time in program history. Now, Morton seems convinced that the Red Raiders will accomplish a bit more in the future. When he was asked about the program’s future, Morton didn’t hold back at all.
Behren Morton believes that Texas Tech will win “a lot of championships” with Joey McGuire as the head coach of the Red Raiders
“Oh man, a lot of championships for sure,” Morton said of Texas Tech’s future with McGuire at the helm of the program. “Under Joey McGuire, you’re going to be winning football games.”
This year was certainly evidence that a breakthrough is possible in Lubbock. The Red Raiders have drastically improved from that 7-6 season in year one and managed to get to 12 wins on the season, including the Big 12 championship game.
“So, you’ve got a great leader,” Morton continued. “That guy has done so much for this program.”
McGuire hasn’t been alone in building the Texas Tech football program to this point, the Red Raiders should be spreading the gratitude around a bit. The investments and push to support the program have helped in significant ways.
Still, McGuire should get a considerable amount of credit for all of his work and the assistant coach hires he’s made. And it sounds like his former quarterback has been pretty fond of the way McGuire established the program.
“Love that guy to death,” Morton said. “I would do anything for him, but if Joey McGuire is your head coach, you’re going to be winning football games.
