Since the moment that former 5-star signee Micah Hudson stepped away from the Texas A&M football program earlier this spring, many Texas Tech football fans have assumed that he would return to the Red Raiders. However, another Big 12 team is trying to throw a wrench into those plans.

Multiple sources, including On3 Sports, are reporting on social media that Hudson will take a visit to Salt Lake City, Utah, this weekend, where he will see what the Utah Utes have to offer. That is not what many Red Raider fans thought would happen.

Of course, the prevailing belief in Texas Tech circles has been that Hudson would rejoin the program that he signed with out of high school. That would have made for a tremendous story of redemption.

However, it would be unwise if the sophomore didn't explore all of his options. Texas Tech fans just wish those options weren't with other Big 12 schools.

Though Hudson put up modest stats as a true freshman in 2024 (eight catches for 123 yards and no TDs), he is still considered one of the top portal targets in the country. In fact, 247Sports lists him as a 4-star transfer and the No. 17 wide receiver currently in the portal.

Therefore, Texas Tech fans should have known that he would have other programs interested in him. What's more, he might be interested in a fresh start somewhere else.

It has been suggested (though not confirmed) by some in Texas Tech circles that a return to Lubbock would come with some strong stipulations for Hudson, given the way he left after only one season with the program. In fact, some are even saying that he might only be offered a walk-on opportunity. While that has not come from McGuire or anyone affiliated with the Texas Tech football staff, it wouldn't be a shock if it proved to be true.

However, a new school, such as Utah, would almost certainly welcome Hudson with open arms and give him a clean slate. That would also likely include a NIL deal along with a scholarship.

Therefore, Texas Tech fans should assume nothing when it comes to the Hudson saga. Though most would love to see this talented player put on the Double T once again and fulfill his tremendous potential while playing for the team he began his college career with, there are going to be other suitors in this recruiting battle. In fact, it is fair to wonder just how hard Texas Tech will even fight for Hudson, given the circumstances that have brought us to this point.
