Throughout the past couple of decades of Texas Tech football, we’ve seen plenty of impressive quarterbacks make their way through Lubbock. Not all have gone on to play in the NFL, but there have been a few who have made it.

Like Patrick Mahomes. Or Tyler Shough.

Mahomes is the better known of the two and he’s certainly made his mark on the NFL throughout his career up to this point. Shough, on the other hand, is a newcomer to the NFL ranks given that he played college football for seven years. And during that time, he did spend a little while in Lubbock as part of the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team.

Three seasons of Texas Tech football, to be exact. After leaving the Oregon Ducks behind following three seasons in Eugene, that is. So, he started at Oregon, went to Texas Tech, and then finished out his career at Louisville.

Now he’s in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. It doesn’t seem like many are expecting the rookie quarterback to just flat out and immediately thrive with the Saints. The rookie New Orleans QB is currently ranked among the worst quarterbacks in the NFL, according to CBS Sports

From 2021 through 2023, Shough was a member of the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Unfortunately, injury issues prevented him from playing much during much of the 2021 and 2023 seasons. That said, while he was in Lubbock, he played in 15 games, completed 62.4 percent of his passes, threw for 2922 yards while also tossing 20 touchdowns vs. 11 picks.

Following his time in Lubbock, Shough made his way on over to Louisville, where he had a career year and thrived with the Cardinals. That led to him making his way into the NFL. We’ll see exactly how that goes.
