It’s not very often that Gerry Glasco’s Texas Tech softball team has been shut down on offense. It’s even rarer that it happens in the postseason. And unfortunately for the Texas Tech softball team, Glasco, and Red Raider fans, that happened today.

A grand total of three runs were scored in a nine-inning matchup with the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. One of the best hitting teams in the country clearly struggled at the plate as the Tennessee Lady Volunteers managed to keep Texas Tech from scoring with ease.

The head coach of the Red Raiders is certainly aware of that. And as it turns out, he’s also aware of how rare this sort of occurrence is for the Texas Tech softball program. After giving credit to the crowd at the Women’s College World Series for the atmosphere they created, Glasco complimented Tennessee.

“Phenomenal crowd, phenomenal atmosphere. I thought it was a really good softball game,” Glasco said. “Tip your hat to Tennessee, they won. They shut our offense down in a way that, I don’t think we’ve been shut down like that in the postseason. Give them credit for that.”

Instead of dodging the matter at hand, Glasco addressed it directly. He made it clear that Tennessee played one heck of a game and Texas Tech just clearly wasn’t able to do anything against the Lady Volunteer’s pitching staff or their defense. What Tennessee did to Texas Tech’s bats today was truly impressive.

“I thought their defense made several really, really nice plays. Especially in the big situations, I thought their defense came up big for them.” Glasco explained. “We left eight runners on. In nine innings, we need to have more than five hits.”

And while the Red Raiders’ head coach took the opportunity to point out how Tennessee had shut them down, he also noted that improvement from Texas Tech was absolutely and truly necessary. Because the Red Raiders didn’t look great at the plate.

“I thought we gave away some really important at-bats. Especially leading off the innings and when we’ve got runners in scoring position,” Glasco said. “I don’t think we valued the at-bats as much as we should on the offensive side. We'll work on that tomorrow and come back better.”
