Because the Texas Tech Red Raiders have beefed up their defense with a ton of new players thanks to the magic of the Transfer Portal, it can be easy to forget that there are some key pieces to the Red Raiders’ roster who have been around Lubbock for a few years.

Jacob Rodriguez is quite possibly the perfect example of that for Texas Tech.

The preseason Defensive Player of the Year for the Big 12, Rodriguez brings a wealth of experience with him as he returned to Lubbock to play for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders for another season.

And it sure seems like McGuire and the Texas Tech football team happy to have him back with the Red Raiders in Lubbock.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire thrilled to get Jacob Rodriguez back for another season with the Red Raiders

“He and his wife came into my office, sat down with us,” McGuire explained. “We do a PowerPoint presentation for guys that are eligible for the draft and all the information that we get from the NFL and from the scouts.”

That’s a really solid approach to helping provide players with as much information as possible so that they can make the most informed decision possible.

“We sit down with him and his wife and walk through where he thought he would go and what the benefits would be for him coming back,” Texas Tech’s head coach said.

It is worth noting that McGuire and the Texas Tech defense also certainly benefit from getting Rodriguez back. That can’t be ignored as we go through all of this. But I still appreciate that the Red Raiders would take the time to help Rodriguez make an informed choice as to how to move forward with his future.

“Man, I’m just glad he made the choice to come back,” McGuire stated.
