A lot has changed for Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton since last season ended. After a really solid season of leading the Red Raiders offense, Morton ended up losing the offensive coordinator he worked with the past three seasons as Zach Kittley became a head coach at FAU. Along with that, Morton also had surgery.
So, there’s been a lot that he’s had to go through and try to learn. He’s had to pick up a new offensive system as Mack Leftwich was hired away from GJ Kinne and the Texas State Bobcats to be the Red Raiders offensive coordinator.
And that can be challenging for a player. But so far, it seems like things are going well.
During a press conference earlier this week, McGuire was asked about how Morton was doing throughout the offseason and if there were areas of improvement from the Texas Tech quarterback who is fresh off a season of throwing for over 3300 yards and 27 touchdowns.
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire compliments Behren Morton as Red Raiders head into 2025 season opener
“I think the pace on his football is one of the biggest things, you know,” McGuire said. “I mean, he did a good job last year, but I don’t necessarily think, he would tell you more than me about the movement and different things he was having to do, how much it bothered him to do that.”
Of course, Morton did play well last year, but he did seem hindered by an injury. And hopefully that won’t be the case this season. According to McGuire, Texas Tech’s quarterback is doing a bit better.
“Honestly, you see the guy that his ankle wasn’t sprained in the first half against Oklahoma State my very first year,” McGuire said. “That’s what you see.”
I, for one, think that’s a good thing to see.
“You see a guy that is running around, feeling great,” Texas Tech’s head coach explained. “The ball is coming out of his hand, he’s got a really good feel for this offense.”
And honestly, given the talent and athleticism there with Morton, that’s exactly what you want. The only other thing a Texas Tech football fan could ask for is to have their starting quarterback who is now apparently healthy to also have a great relationship with his new offensive coordinator.
Which, might just be the case.
“I think he and Mack have become really close and have great conversations of what we can do,” McGuire said. “He’s also a guy that knows that he’s got some really good football players around him and wants to take advantage of it.”
