Joey McGuire has been in Lubbock as the head coach for a few seasons now and he’s been able to see the impact that his leadership and guidance (and that of his coaching staff) has had an impact on the players in the program.

And it looks like Texas Tech’s head coach is pretty dang proud of the way some leaders are developing on his team.

Like Caleb Douglas, who has, as McGuire noted, become a key leader for the Red Raiders in the wide receiver room. Douglas hasn’t been with the Red Raiders for all that long, but the wide receiver from Missouri City, Texas thrived with Texas Tech last season and sure seems to be at home with Texas Tech.

“I’m just really, really proud of him and one of the reasons he’s one of the six that we brought [to Big 12 media days] is because of his leadership that he’s shown in the offseason and the voice that he’s developed in that wide receiver room,” McGuire explained.

I, for one, think that’s great. I also love that McGuire is, more or less, pointing out the value of having leaders in multiple spaces across his team and the Texas Tech football program.

“He’s become a real leader,” Texas Tech’s head coach said.

Those sorts of qualities are great for any organization to have and it also helps that Douglas has demonstrated that he can be great on the field as well. In his career, he has managed to catch 81 passes for 1185 yards and nine touchdowns, but 60 of those receptions, 877 of those receiving yards, and six of those touchdowns came during his time with Texas Tech.
