The Texas Tech Red Raiders made a significant push in the transfer portal to get a number of key players in the transfer portal and Lee Hunter was one such star that Joey McGuire and Texas Tech brought to town.

A remarkably talented defensive lineman, Hunter was a huge get for the Red Raiders. We’re talking about a guy who made a very real impact on the UCF Knights defense and played a rather significant role with their transition to the Big 12 over the past couple of seasons.

And Hunter thrived in the move to the Big 12. With the Knights, he managed to rack up a combined total of 131 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and five sacks. When he left UCF via the Transfer Portal this past offseason, the 6-foot-4, 325 pound defensive lineman was rated as a 4-star prospect.

And he was one of the most talented additions that Texas Tech was able to get via the transfer portal. That in and of itself is a great thing, but it also sounds like Hunter is playing an important role on his new team from a leadership standpoint.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire highlights what makes Lee Hunter special

“He’s bigger than life, man,” Joey McGuire noted at Big 12 media days. “He’s got such a great personality.”

Great personalities are a great thing to have in a locker room, if you ask me.

“The one thing that we didn’t want to do whenever we brought all these new guys in, some of these guys have been leaders on their previous teams, and so we wanted to make sure that we gave them a voice,” Texas Tech’s head coach stated.

That’s a really good leadership approach to take when adding in new contributors to any sort of organization. It’s great to see that McGuire apparently sees the value in that and empowers his players to be leaders within the program.
