The Texas Tech Red Raiders are known for scoring points, scaring defenses, and exciting fans with innovation. That’s especially true when you look over the past couple of decades of college football and the way that things have developed for the Red Raiders over the years.
It’s one of the many reasons as to why Zach Kittley was a great fit for Texas Tech with Joey McGuire as the head coach. However, Kittley is now a head coach himself as he leads the Florida Atlantic Owls. And after losing a sharp, creative offensive coordinator, McGuire was able to go out and pick up another one.
Enter Mack Leftwich, who has been innovating on offense alongside G.J. Kinne and his brand of the veer and shoot offense. Leftwich has been on the receiving end of plenty of attention in recent years for the way that he’s helped orchestrate fun offenses and he’s going to continue to get a lot of attention if that continues in Lubbock.
During Big 12 Media Days, McGuire noted the sort of drive and potential that Leftwich has. And it seems like Texas Tech’s head coach is pretty impressed with his new offensive coordinator.
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire hopes to keep Mack Leftwich in Lubbock for a few years before he becomes a head coach
“He understands what it takes to lead a team,” McGuire said. “I’ve been really impressed, I’m excited to go into a game with him.”
Well, there you have it. He definitely seems impressed.
“Kittley had a lot of success at Western Kentucky and had a lot of success at Texas Tech,” McGuire said. “And Mack has done the same thing. He did it in Incarnate Word. He did it at Texas State. And I know he’s really excited about the offense that he has to lead.”
As for what Leftwich’s potential is? Well, if you continue the trend of comparing and contrasting Texas Tech’s previous offensive coordinator with the current architect for the Red Raiders’ offense, things look good.
“I really do think Mack will be a head coach,” McGuire admitted. “I’m hoping I get to keep him for at least three years like I got to keep Kittley, but I expect him to be a head coach someday.”
And I think that’s accurate. The brand of offense that Leftwich brings is going to excite a lot of programs looking for someone to revolutionize their approach to scoring. Plus, he’s got an abundance of experience in recruiting talent rich areas across the state of Texas. That’s going to be very valuable for a lot of teams.
