As we get set for the final regular season series for Gerry Glasco, NiJaree Canady, and the entirety of the Texas Tech softball team, we’re witnessing a Big 12 batting average race that really isn’t a race at all. Right now, there isn’t anyone in the Big 12 that can come remotely close to what the Texas Tech Red Raiders are doing when they’re at the plate.

At the moment, Texas Tech is hitting .390 as a team. The next best Big 12 team is sitting at .355 on the season entering the final weekend of conference play. That’s a 35 point gap between the two best teams that are perched at the top of the conference.

And it’s present this late in the season, which is truly remarkable.

Texas Tech softball’s .390 batting average is totally unlike anything else from anyone else in the Big 12

Here’s how all of that breaks down for the Big 12:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - .390 batting average in 52 games
  • Arizona Wildcats - .355 batting average in 47 games
  • Kansas Jayhawks - .335 batting average in 49 games
  • Iowa State Cyclones - .326 batting average in 51 games
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - .319 batting average in 51 games
  • UCF Knights - .318 batting average in 51 games
  • Oklahoma State Cowgirls - .313 batting average in 47 games
  • Utah Utes - .303 batting average in 52 games
  • Houston Cougars - .285 batting average in 51 games
  • BYU Cougars - .283 batting average in 47 games
  • Baylor Bears - .283 batting average in 51 games

What makes this so impressive to me is that we’re seeing Texas Tech having recorded 513 hits (so far). That’s across 52 games with 1314 at bats. And there’s depth to this. This is a whole team that has come together to put a collective batting average close to .400 this season.

As the Red Raiders enter this weekend, they get the chance to play a team tied for the worst batting average in the conference. That could be a lot of fun to watch.
