So far this season, the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Oklahoma State Cowboys have experienced very, very different things. Joey McGuire has the Red Raiders off to a 6-1 start on the season (and 3-1 in conference play) following a close (and frustrating) road loss against the Arizona State Sun Devils.

On the other side of things, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have fired their head coach, made a change at defensive coordinator, and are just trying to get through this season while they also figure out what personnel changes will be made outside of getting rid of Mike Gundy and Todd Grantham.

A new head coach will be in Stillwater soon enough. But for now, the Cowboys are going to continue struggling. And Texas Tech is in the perfect spot to bounce back after last week’s loss, largely because they’re a much better team than Oklahoma State.

The stats help make that pretty dang clear.

The gulf of success between Texas Tech and Oklahoma State is pretty incredible and astonishing

To help go over just how good Texas Tech is right now and just how bad the Cowboys have been this season, let’s compare where they rank in the Big 12 in a few different stats. Because this will help make things a bit clearer as to the difference in what these two teams have been through this season.

All of these rankings are how they stack up amongst other Big 12 teams, by the way

  • Scoring offense: Texas Tech - No. 1 (43.9 PPG) vs Oklahoma State - No. 16 (16.6 PPG)
  • Scoring defense: Texas Tech - No. 1 (14.1 PPG) vs Oklahoma State - No. 16 (38.4 PPG)
  • Total offense: Texas Tech - No. 1 (517.9 YPG) vs Oklahoma State - No. 16 (311.6 YPG)
  • Total defense Texas Tech - No. 1 (276.4 YPG) vs Oklahoma State - No. 16 (468.9 YPG)

To again make it clear: entering this week, Texas Tech has the most statistically impressive offense in the Big 12. The Red Raiders have scored more than anyone else in the conference up to this point and they’ve gained more yards than anyone else in the Big 12 so far.

That’s just incredible.

To go along with that, Texas Tech also has a truly dominant defense that has been great all season long up to this point. The Red Raiders have shut down numerous opponents throughout the season and sure look ready to getting back to thriving after having a rough week this past weekend.
