Entering this season, I admittedly didn’t think the Cincinnati Bearcats would be all that impressive. And yet, we’re in week 9 of the 2025 college football season and Cincinnati has yet to lose a game in Big 12 play.

I appreciate underdog programs accomplishing more than expected, generally, and this is something that I would usually be over the moon about. However, Texas Tech went and lost on the road last week against the Arizona State Sun Devils. And that means that Cincinnati is currently ahead of Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders in the Big 12 standings.

That’s not ideal. Not for Texas Tech football fans, at least.

So, as the Baylor Bears head to Ohio to meet up with the Bearcats, Texas Tech fans might just find themselves rooting for a certain team from Waco to help the Red Raiders out a bit.

How does this game impact Texas Tech? Will the Baylor Bears help the Red Raiders out?

The Bearcats aren’t perfect on the season, they’re 6-1 overall with a loss to Nebraska. But Nebraska hasn’t been in the Big 12 in quite some time. So, Cincinnati has just one non-conference loss and not a single loss against a conference foe.

That means, at 4-0 in Big 12 play, the Bearcats are tied for first in the Big 12 standings right alongside the BYU Cougars. Both of those teams are just a smidge ahead of Texas Tech right now.

And that’s where a potential Baylor win would allow for Texas Tech to be in a better spot. But that would also mean that Texas Tech can’t slack off down the stretch of this season. Because if Baylor beats Cincinnati, then the Bears will be right behind the Red Raiders, ready for Texas Tech to slip up again. And that wouldn’t be ideal. So, it would be ideal if Texas Tech just kept winning.

This is a great opportunity for Cincinnati to really make an impact on the Big 12. And that’s great for them. I don’t want them to have that happen. I’d like to see the Bears find a way to upend the Bearcats and help the Red Raiders out a bit.
