The game of the year has finally arrived for Texas Tech football fans. But for the first time in decades, the season's most anticipated home date doesn't involve the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, or Texas A&M Aggies.

Rather, it is "Coach Prime" and his Colorado Buffaloes who are drawing the interest of Red Raider fans everywhere. Naturally, the brash Deion Sanders is drawing a ton of attention this year and he's bringing his traveling circus to Lubbock where FOX's Big Noon Kickoff has come to partake in the festivities.

What is a bit of a surprise, though, Sanders has actually put together a decent team this year. The Buffaloes are sitting at 6-2 on the season and 4-1 in Big 12 action. They sit at No. 20 in the latest A.P. poll.

On the other hand, though, Colorado hasn't managed to beat a team that most people would consider to be quality this year. Their best Big 12 win came at home against a Baylor team that, yes, did beat Texas Tech soundly in Lubbock but which is just 5-4 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play.

What's more, that win required two miraculous plays for Colorado to prevail including a last-second Hail Mary at the end of regulation to send the affair to overtime. Therefore, it isn't as if Colorado's resume is chalked full of big-time wins.

In fact, a strong case could be made that Tech will be the second-best team that the Buffs have played this year behind Kansas State (and if you want to argue that Tech is a better team than KSU right now, you might have a point). Therefore, this game should be fascinating as two programs with vastly different styles of play and vastly different internal cultures clash on the South Plains. So let's look at all the game information fans will need to know ahead of today's critical Big 12 matchup.

  • Tahj Brooks will look to become Texas Tech’s all-time leading rusher Saturday as the senior needs 121 rushing yards versus the Buffaloes to break Byron Hanspard’s career record. Brooks continues to rank among the national leaders in rushing yards per game this season as he is fifth in the FBS with 130.9 yards on the ground per contest. Brooks became only the third Red Raider all-time and just the ninth rusher in Big 12 history to reach the 4,000-yard mark at Iowa State as he enters this weekend with 4,099 rushing yards for his illustrious career.
  • Tahj Brooks is one of only two rushers in the country this season to hit the 100-yard mark on the ground in every game he has played this season (minimum 7 games) and the only one to do so from a power conference.
  • Texas Tech was 3-4 against the Buffaloes during their first stint in the Big 12 with four of those games determined by only one possession. The home team won five of seven contests with the two exceptions being the last two meetings in the series. Colorado shocked the Red Raiders, 31-26, in Lubbock in 2007 before Texas Tech went to Boulder and delivered a 27-24 victory behind a Matt Williams 36-yard field goal with 2:09 remaining in regulation.
  • Texas Tech is 4-1 at home all-time against Colorado with its lone loss coming in that 2007 setback where the Red Raiders threw four interceptions, including three to Colorado defensive back Terrence Wheatley. The Red Raiders had won the previous four meetings up to that point, including a 31-10 rout in 1999 and a 26-21 victory in 2003 as Big 12 members.
  • Texas Tech will host FOX’s pregame show Big Noon Kickoff for the first time this weekend as the traveling show will construct its set in the green space student tailgating location immediately west of Jones AT&T Stadium, the heart of Texas Tech’s pregame festivities each Saturday on campus. The two-hour show will begin at 9 a.m. on FOX.
  • Texas Tech is currently in the midst of its longest bowl streak since its 2000-10 stretch, primarily under Mike Leach. Texas Tech has made a postseason appearance in four-consecutive seasons only twice in its history as, in addition to the run under Leach, the Red Raiders reached a bowl game four-straight years from 1993-96 under Spike Dykes.
  • Texas Tech will be facing a top-25 foe for the second time in as many weeks Saturday as the Red Raiders are coming off a 23-22 victory at No. 11/10 Iowa State last weekend. The victory marked Texas Tech’s first road win over a top-10 team in either poll since shocking No. 1 Oklahoma, 41-38, midway through the 2011 season. The Red Raiders had not topped a top-10 opponent at home or on the road since routing No. 4 West Virginia, 49-14, in 2012.
  • The Red Raiders will be looking for back-to-back wins over ranked opponents in consecutive games for the first time since 2012 when Texas Tech knocked off No. 4 West Virginia at home and then followed with a three-overtime thriller over No. 21 TCU the next weekend in Fort Worth.
