A lot of focus, fan chatter online, and headlines have been put on the way that Texas Tech’s team has come together over the offseason thanks to a monumental push via the transfer portal. The Red Raiders, not typically seen as a recruiting powerhouse, managed to have some really impressive recruiting wins (especially in the transfer portal).

And folks tend to have thoughts on all of that as we are now in a new era of college football. The Red Raiders seem poised to be able to take advantage of the new structures that exist and that has ruffled a few feathers here and there.

On Monday, Joey McGuire was asked about the pressure that might come with building such an impressive roster via spending and compensating players. And right now, it looks like the head coach of the Red Raiders doesn’t seem to be feeling much pressure.

It looks like he’s managing things just fine.

Joey McGuire discusses Texas Tech’s roster spending and the pressure that comes with that

“I feel very fortunate to have the team we have,” McGuire said. “I love our team, I love our roster. I love how close they are.”

Honestly, same. I love the way this Texas Tech team came together and the emphasis that the Red Raiders put on improving in some very methodical and necessary ways. There’s plenty of opportunity for success because of the way that this roster was assembled and the assistant coaches that were brought in to help maximize this talent.

“I feel the exact same way that I have, you know, from year one to now,” Texas Tech’s head coach explained. “I mean, I expect to win. I expect to win on Saturday, we expect to win the next Saturday.”

And that’s a great way to put it. Regardless of the system that is in place or the structures that exist, McGuire is expecting the Red Raiders to have success. And that’s a great thing to have from the head coach of the Texas Tech football team. But of course, spending money does make that a bit easier.

But is Texas Tech spending more money than anyone else on roster building? Well, uh, maybe.

“God that’s a good question,” McGuire said. “It’s interesting because I think some people might have us beat on who’s the most expensive roster, but you know, nobody would admit it.”
