On Saturday, for the first time in program history, we’re going to see the Texas Tech Red Raiders compete in the Big 12 championship game. And while this is the first time the Texas Tech football team will have the opportunity to go out and try to win the Big 12 championship, this isn’t exactly Joey McGuire’s first time competing in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

As the head coach of the Red Raiders noted, he’s been there a handful of times all throughout his career. And here’s to hoping that the Texas Tech football team will be able to give McGuire yet another opportunity to be proud of competing there.

“The Cowboys’ stadium is one of my favorite places, I have some incredible memories there,” McGuire said in a press conference when discussing Texas Tech’s rematch against BYU. “I think I have 13 of 14 games as a head coach in that stadium.”

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is ‘fired up’ about facing the BYU Cougars in a rematch in the Big 12 championship game

When he started the press conference, Texas Tech’s head coach made sure to note that he was thrilled about this opportunity and promptly shared some respect for the head coach of the Cougars.

“I’m fired up, man,” McGuire said. “I have a lot of respect for Kalani, I think it’s the best two teams in the conference playing each other. Whenever you look at what we’ve done on the field and the different teams that we’ve played, I’m really excited.”

And yeah, that tracks.

Texas Tech has completely and totally steamrolled right past the vast majority of its opponents, securing each of its 11 wins by at least 22 points. The Red Raiders have an average margin of victory of 35.2 points per victory.

As for BYU? Well, the only team the Cougars have managed to lose to is the Texas Tech Red Raiders, but that game was in Lubbock. It’s going to be fascinating to see how they match up in this rematch.

“It’s going to be incredible when we walk in there, the energy,” McGuire continued. “I’m looking forward to setting a new attendance record because you’re going to have two of the best fanbases in the country in Arlington and I know the Red Raiders are going to show up.”
